CHART INSTRUCTIONS

How to Read This Cross Stitch Pattern

  1. 1. Stitch Count & Fabric
  • Design size: [X] × [Y] stitches (shown on the cover).
  • To find the finished size, divide by your fabric count, e.g. on 14‑count:
  • width: X ÷ 14, height: Y ÷ 14 (inches).
  • Add at least 2–3 inches of extra fabric on each side for framing.
  • Finish/overcast the raw edges (zigzag stitch, serger, or tape) to prevent fraying.
  1. Symbols & Color Key
  • Each square on the chart = one cross stitch.
  • The symbol inside the square tells you which floss color to use.
  • Use the color key to match symbol → floss brand & number (e.g., DMC 310).
  • Unless stated otherwise, work full cross stitches with 2 strands of floss on 14/16/18‑count Aida.
  1. Multi‑Page Chart Layout

This pattern is printed on multiple pages so the symbols are large and easy to read.

  • A small diagram on the pattern will show exactly how your pages fit together.
  • Some rows/columns may overlap between pages; use them to line up the design and avoid skipping or repeating stitches. These are often shown as greyed areas
  • You may start in the center (marked with arrows on the chart edges) or the top left, as you prefer.

Tip: Use a highlighter or pencil to mark stitches as you complete them so you don’t lose your place.

  1. Shaded Areas (Do Not Stitch)
  • Grey/shaded areas on the chart are not part of the design.
  • Do not stitch where the chart is shaded. Treat those squares as blank fabric.
  • Shaded areas are usually used for overlaps or layout and are explained in the chart notes.
  1. Backstitch & Other Details
  • Backstitch is used for outlines and fine details.
  • On the chart, backstitch appears as lines drawn over the squares.
  • The backstitch key tells you:
  • Which floss color to use
  • How many strands (often 1 or 2 strands)

Work most or all of your full cross stitches first, then add backstitch and any special stitches (e.g., straight stitch, French knots) at the end.

  1. Stitching Workflow
  1. Choose a small area and a symbol to start with.
  1. Thread your needle with the floss color for that symbol (correct number of strands).
  1. Stitch that symbol in your chosen area, counting carefully.
  1. Mark the finished stitches on your chart.
  1. Move on to the next symbol/section.
  1. Variations in the Finished Piece

Your finished project may differ slightly from the cover image due to:

  • Fabric count and color
  • Lighting during photography
  • Individual stitching tension

This is completely normal—every stitched piece is unique.
